Employment background checks for defaults

For most types of employment its very important to check the background of employees before taking them on. Take for example someone working in a bar, handling cash. If that person had credit defaults then they may well be tempted to steal cash to pay off their debts. Taking out employment background checks is no longer optional for businesses, it is common sense and good business management.

Only recently Credit Check Services came across a company with a small chain of retail stores. The company had never before carried out any type of credit checks on their employees. In one of their stores cash was going missing, the company found out through auditing bank receipts against stock in the store. They could not find out which employee or employees where taking cash out of the business, so they sacked every member of staff in the shop.

This was fairly drastic action, possibly an over-reaction. But the fundamental message to employers is check your staff for bad credit history before taking them on, at least then you will have an idea of who can or cannot trust to handle cash.

In another example a company running a small group of bars employed a manager to look after their day to day operations. They started to suspect cash missing from the business. A credit check was taken out on the manager, the result was he had over £20,000 of court enforced debts. The company immediately dismissed their manager.

There are many similar examples, cases where employers learn after the event. However the smarter employers are already putting in place processes for background credit checks before taking staff on. A proactive approach is far more cost effective.
