7 Countries With the Best Universal Healthcare Systems
A report published back in 2000 by the World Health Organization (WHO) offered a glimpse at the facts surrounding the use of universal health care as a viable system. The report listed a total of ten different countries that ranked highest. Of those, the following 7 countries have the best universal healthcare systems.
Now, such reports are often only as good as the methods used to reach the posted conclusions. In the case of the WHO report, a variety of internal factors and specific areas were ranked in order to reach any conclusions about the quality of each country’s health care system.
France’s universal healthcare system, for example, which tops this list, was shown to excel in four key areas.
* It provides universal coverage
* It has responsive health care providers
* Patients have freedom of choice
* The health and longevity of the population
Underscored By Debate
Today, universal healthcare is one of those hot-button issues that are driving large segments of the political conversations going on, in the United States and beyond. It is especially headed in the U.S. for the simple fact it is almost the only modern, industrialized country that does not have some form of universal healthcare system already in place.
The questions and the accusations continue to fly. Misunderstandings and deliberate misrepresentations of just what “universal healthcare” is have muddied the waters for any effective debate. Some opinions are set in hard stone like granite. There is no swaying such minds – this includes both sides of the debate.
Outside the United States there a whole other world, where universal health care has been a normal part of life in the countries included in that report. Universal healthcare as a system takes a variety of forms depending on what country you choose. For many it takes the form of government supervised, single-payer organizations. Others stray into the realms of so-called “socialized medicine” where the physicians themselves are government employees. Others offer a mixture of private and public options for their citizens.
The main point is that these countries do a tremendous amount to provide universal health care coverage to their people, at lower costs, and with other benefits that are not available in countries like the United States.

Any serious discussion of universal healthcare must take such diversity into account when weighing all of the advantages and disadvantages of such systems. Better still, if one would just take some time to research the countries that topped the list in the World Health Organization’s report, there may be a greater degree of clarity for all invested in the conversation.
